The nature of God

When we pause and reflect on the nature of God, we’re reminded of His unchanging presence. You get impressions of who God is through so many sources–everyone seems to have an opinion. But there is only one source we can trust, and that’s God Himself through his Word.

God is spirit.

“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:24

God is the most powerful being.

“Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.” – Jeremiah 32:17

Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure. – Psalm 147:5

God is everlasting.

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. – Isaiah 40:28

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. – Psalm 90:2

God is holy.

But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’ – 1 Peter 1:15-16

Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy. – Psalm 99:9

And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, ‘Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!’ – Revelation 4:8

God creates good.

And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. – Genesis 1:31

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. – James 1:17

God is love.

Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. – 1 John 4:8

So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. – 1 John 4:16

God is in everything.

And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. – Colossians 1:17

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” Revelation 22:13

God does not tempt.

Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. – James 1:13

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. – 1 Corinthians 10:13

God is patient.

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. – 2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. – Psalm 103:8

God is forgiving.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. – 1 John 1:9

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you. – Psalm 86:5

Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. – Micah 7:18

God genuinely cares for us and our needs.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. – Matthew 10:29-31

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:19

Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. – 1 Peter 5:7

God is active.

But Jesus answered them, ‘My Father is working until now, and I am working.’ – John 5:17

Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. – Psalm 121:4

God desires all to know Him and find peace.

This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. – 1 Timothy 2:3-4

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. – 2 Peter 3:9

He also desires a relationship with us.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” – Revelation 3:20

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” – John 15:15

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. – Hebrews 10:22

In a world that constantly changes, we desperately seek something to hold on to, something unshakeable. Political climates shift, leaders come and go, nations rise and fall. But through it all, God stands immovable, His promises enduring beyond any empire or age.

The God who spoke the universe into existence, who breathed life into Adam, is the same God who knows each of us intimately, down to the very number of hairs on our heads. The Lord who provided manna for the Israelites is the same God who whispers peace into our chaos today.

God is not bound by the ebb and flow of time, nor is He altered by human circumstances or world events. His sovereignty and love remain steadfast and always ready for you to put your trust, your hope, your whole self, into His hands.

SELAH.
