Lectio Divina: a divine reflection

Lectio Divina is a contemplative and prayerful way of reading the Bible. This practice dates back to the early centuries of the Christian Church and was solidified as a monastic tradition by Saint Benedict in the 6th century.

It invites us to slow down, to meditate, and to savor God’s Word. By reading a passage repeatedly and carefully, scripture begins to speak to us in a personal and transformative way, drawing us closer to God through Christ, the Living Word.

How to Practice Lectio Divina

  • Sit comfortably.

  • Breathe slowly and deeply.

  • Ask God to speak to you through His Word.

Lectio Divina begins with silence. Prayer is not only about speaking to God but also listening for His voice. As you enter this space, don’t feel pressure to have immediate insights. God is patient and will meet you where you are, speaking to you through the Scriptures.

Step 1: First Reading – Listen

  • Read the passage slowly.

  • Listen for a word or phrase that stands out.

  • Let this word or phrase arise naturally, as if it is God’s message for you today.

  • Sit in silence, repeating this word or phrase in your mind.

  • Then, say the word or phrase aloud.

Step 2: Second Reading – Ponder

  • Read the passage again, considering the word or phrase that drew your attention.

  • Ask yourself how it connects to your life. Why does it resonate?

  • Reflect deeply, even if distractions arise—these can be offerings to God.

  • Sit quietly, then frame a single sentence that captures what this word or phrase means to you, and say it aloud.

Step 3: Third Reading – Pray

  • Read the passage one final time.

  • Ask what Christ is calling you to do or change. What action, attitude, or perspective is God inviting you to embrace?

  • In the silence that follows, pray for the Holy Spirit’s grace to help you internalize and live out this word.

As you experiment with these practices, remember that reflection is a journey, not a destination. It’s about making space for God to speak, guide, and work in your life. Find a method that resonates with your heart and embark on a meaningful adventure in Scripture reflection. Your spiritual life will be all the richer for it.
